According to "The Art of Teaching Map and Compass: Instructional Techniques, Curricular Formats and Practical Field Exercises" by Ron Watters, ..."the value of teaching map and compass in a classroom or an outdoor situation is often overlooked. A commonly held impression is that it dry and unappealing. But, when taught correctly using a combination of exercises indoors and outdoors, map and compass can be one of the most enjoyable of all outdoor activities, generating excitement and enthusiasm even among the most reserved students."

Teachers and Educators Please Note that ESRI Canada Schools and Libraries Program website has resources for educators using geographic information systems (GIS) in their classrooms. GIS is a tool that uses the power of the computer to pose and answer geographic questions by arranging and displaying data about places on the planet in a variety of ways: maps, charts, and tables. ArcView GIS software can transform computers in schools, libraries and other educationally focused organizations into sites of geographic exploration.

Geomatics for High School Curriculum
This Web Site had been developed as a cooperative project with support and input from the federal government, private industry and high school teachers. The objective of the project was to develop a series of lessons suited for the new grade 9 curriculum in Ontario that could be distributed over the Internet. The lessons are designed to provide the resources and data necessary to explore ten grade 9 geography topics using Canada's ecozones as a common base. As well as resource and background information each lesson details a GIS exercise and provides the data required to run it. The lessons also provide the users with links to other data and information sites that can be accessed through the Internet.
Teacher's Geomatics Assistant (TGA) is an internet resource for teachers interested in learning about geomatics and how to use it in their classrooms. The TGA presents background resources for teachers interested in learning about geomatics to increase their knowledge base and better understand how it may be used in their classroom. In addition the TGA provides training resources for teachers who want to enhance their geomatics understanding. The training section provides links to on-line sites that will help train teachers in different aspects of geomatics. As well teachers who want formal training can use links in the career path resources to find educational institutes that provide geomatics training.
