Free digital NTS Maps

Get raster and vector maps from the following National Topographic Data Base (NTDB), Canada website:

Browse the Download Directory:

The National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) comprises digital vector data sets that cover the entire Canadian landmass. Geomatics Canada has digitized and structured thousands of topographic maps, creating a complete and uniform product that can be highly useful in a broad range of industries. The NTDB includes features such as watercourses, urban areas, railways, roads, vegetation, and relief.

The organizational unit for the NTDB is the National Topographic System (NTS), based on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). Each file (data set) consists of one NTS unit at either the 1:50,000 or 1:250,000 scale. Furthermore, the data is now available by themes within a file. The ground data is depicted through points, lines, and areas.

The NTDB provides a base of properly structured vector data (segmentation, mathematical closure, connection and sharing between entities) designed and suited for geographic information system (GIS) applications. It also can be used for preparing thematic maps.

The GeoGratis website uses both File Transfert Protocol (FTP) and HyperText Transfert Protocol (HTTP) to distribute geospatial data via its portal.

Because some digital files are large, often tens of megabites in size, plan to download during off-peak hours.

Finally, it should be noted that the geospatial data have a wide variety of sources, scales, resolutions, projections, spectral resolutions and formats.

New Release: NTDB 1:50,000 and 1:250,000

February 29th, 2008 - A new release of the NTDB product is now available with over 3000 new or improved files.

Please note this new NTDB release at the scale of 1:50,000 for the Canada is the last one. It is no longer subject to data discrepancy corrections and will remain a static data collection. As for the 1:250,000 NTDB data collection, the last release is planned for early 2009.

The new CanVec product available on the GeoGratis Web site since April 2007 is the new digital topographic reference product in vector format at the scale of 1:50,000. This product is issued from the best data sources available and will be fully supported for data correction and updates.

New Release: CanImage 1:50,000

February 29th, 2008 - A new release of the CanImage product is now available with 14 new files with improvement of the planimetric accuracy.

Please note this new CanImage release at the scale of 1:50,000 for the Canada is the last one. It is no longer subject to data discrepancy corrections and will remain a static data collection.
